A friend of mine has been posting details of certain atrocities on her FB profile in somewhat a spree. She posted this, this and this. Well, let me add this too. And why not this and this too? Oh, its all gory! You need more of it? Just check the papers daily. You will at least find one case of husband killing a wife or a mother killing her children and later herself etc. I bet you, you will find one. The classic is a guy throwing a girl off a building. At first, it will seem to almost all that the poor, weak and overpowered women have always been the victims. Then comes the "atrocities -against -women" slogans. I believe, we are not dealing with the problem here. The women sentiment is like only attending to the symptoms. Women have always been stupid in this country and elsewhere too. They take too much pain and seek sympathy instead of kicking where it hurts when required. Of course they are victims in all the examples above. And we have written laws for ourselves and that says the one who is the reason for this has to punished based on another set of laws. So we go investigate and find them, try them, sentence them and punish them. And then... oops, there is someone else who is dead. Its OK, we have the law. Find them, try them, sentence them and punish them. Oops... there we go again!
I disagree with two things here. Women are not the only victims. If you look carefully, there are still worse things happening around. For example, take a look at this. If you think there are too many statistics, read this article by P. Sainath himself. Another example is here. Please mind, I am not saying the crimes quoted in the beginning are any less worse than the farmer suicides or the massacre by the Naxals. Let me make a comparison here.
Once I was discussing with a cousin of mine about how the 2012 prophesy came to be and was mentioning about the Mayans and said that they were very barbaric. He chipped in and asked what did I mean here by barbaric. Well, I remember watching in the Discovery Channel about them and they mentioned a story where they brought a girl from a neighboring tribe in goodwill and then peeled her skin while she was still alive and then sacrificed her to their Gods. Human sacrifices were routine to them, I guess. But my cousin insisted, how can we call them barbaric! I tried to answer, "We don't see those kind of things happening today, do we?". Then he too quoted some incidents like those here in the beginning. I tried to argue... "... but we are more civilized...", but I got the point. Just because we make some laws and rules, we are not perfect. We are not inert. A modest and shy guy killed his wife and then himself when he came to know that his wife is having an affair with her colleague. He didn't give a damn about the law. Forget it! Moms and Dads, they too kill their children because their son or daughter wanted to marry someone from a different caste or religion. They don't give a damn about the law. What I am trying to say is, when we say that women are victimized or by find-try-sentence-punish policy, we are only dealing with the symptoms. We feel bad for the victims. We think that justice has been done when we hear the sentence. We are too busy and too stupid to actually see what is wrong, who is the real culprit, how to set it right!
We have formed the constitution but we have so many religions. When it comes to breaking the law or going against the religion, it is always breaking the law. When it comes to what we want and what would others think about it, it is always what others would think about it. Put under extreme stress and is it thought or instinct, we are after all animals, it is always instinct; take the knife, slit the throat!
I am not a theist nor an atheist. I am a cynic. I do not believe the believers and I do not care for the non-believers. I will take the philosophy but not the bullshit. I hold the same perspective for everything man has formed, including the law and the constitution. Being a cynic, I try not to take any sides. It is better to think for yourself. Let me end this rambling with two perspectives.
We all like babies. They are so cute. But at times, I have observed that people do not show the same pleasure when they see a baby, say at an orphanage or traffic signal. The baby is cute for sure. Even I observed it in me. There is sodomy in all of us. The degrees are different. Put in those situations, the sodomy can reach to any level.
The Constitution of the Republic of India was written by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. He was supposedly from a discriminated caste. So, he knew that special reservations have to be created to provide opportunities for these discriminated people so that they will be educated and soon the differences between the disciminated and the discriminating will be removed and the caste system as such will not have any meaning. Same with religion. But we all know what is happening. Now, Ambedkar was not thinking of saving or providing special services to the people of his community. I believe, he too was a cynic and the caste and religion had no meaning to him except for the philosophy in it. During the later stages of his life, he was so fed up with the "people", he quit everything with respect to politics and the so called social life. He became a Buddhist and died a Buddhist. And do you want to know who those "people" are? Just look around you. Everyone of them who is putting religion and caste before the person or a life or an intellect, they are the "people".
